Italy becomes the first European team to qualify to the UEFA Women’s World Cup Qualifying playoffs as they defeated Finland 3-1, thereby mathematically eliminating Finland (and anyone else) from contention.

In Group 1, France emphatically defeated Estonia 6-0 with goals from five different players. This now puts them three points ahead of Iceland. Each team just have two more matches to play and the next one will be against each other in late August.

In Group 2, Norway extended their lead over the Netherlands with a 3-0 win over Belarus. Essentially the only way the Netherlands can win the group is by winning their lone match and hoping Norway loses its final two. Considering Norway’s opponents are Slovakia and Macedonia, it’s quite unlikely.

The Ukraine missed an opportunity to become leaders of Group 3 as they drew 0-0 with Romania. Group 3 remains the most open as just three points separate Poland, Hungary and Ukraine.

Switzerland have also nearly qualified for the play-offs as they won 4-2 against Kazakhstan in Group 6. Ramona Bachmann scored the opening goal while Lyon player Lara Dickenmann scored a pair. Switzerland are now 6 points ahead of Russia and Russia will need to get results from its three remaining games. But even if Russia does win all of its remaining matches, they will still not qualify if Switzerland can beat Kazakhstan again in August.

In the most important game of the day, Italy defeated Finland 3-1 to win Group 7. This concludes Italy’s campaign while the Fins have one remaining game toplay against Slovenia.

And in what has to be among the most lopsided score lines in the history of women’s soccer, Sweden killed Azerbaijan 17-0 in Group 8. There were 10 different goal scorers including Seger and Landstrom who each scored twice and Asllani. The Swedes seemingly shut up shop in the 80′ so it could have presumably been even more. Sweden has practically assured their advancement as even if they lose their final two games, the Czech Republic will still lose on goal difference.

This concludes World Cup Qualifying until August for most teams, although England will be able to win their group if they defeat Turkey on July 29.
