August is WPS Appreciation Month. Why? Because August is hot, lazy and you’re best to stay indoors. Why else? Because it’s never a bad time to appreciate Women’s Professional Soccer. So to commemorate, here’s a daily, alphabetical list of things we’re lucky to have in this league. We start off with a rookie out of Santa Clara University who has had a career-defining season all within the month of July.

Jordan Angeli. Never heard of her? If you’ve been banished from WPS-land for the month of July, you’d be excused. Angeli has virtually come out of nowhere to help lift her Boston Breakers team out of the doldrums.

Some people figured the catalyst of Boston’s renaissance would come from one of the team’s stars like Lauren Cheney, Kelly Smith or Kristine Lilly. Nope, nope and nope. The rookie out of a Santa Clara Univeristy has now scored five goals this season, which puts her seventh in the league. Five of those goals have come in July. She’s also contributed two assists.

And it’s not just the quantity of the goals, it’s also the quality. The converted defender is capable of scoring some real beauties from long-range.

Angeli was perhaps the oldest player to be drafted in the 2010 WPS Draft as she had been redshirted for both her 2007 and 2008 college seasons due to injury. She then started every game for the Broncos in the 2009 season before being drafted 16th overall.

Jordan Angeli; the Boston’s Breakers unexpected spark that lit the fuse.
