Wisconsin's Two Sport Star Alev Kelter's Goal Against Minnesota Has Wisconsin on Top of the Big Ten
Minnesota 0 – 1 (Kelter 57′) Wisconsin [Attendance: 638]
The brutally effective defense of Wisconsin confounded another foe as Wisconsin moved to the head of the queue of Big Ten title contenders with a 1-0 win over high-flying Minnesota in Minneapolis on Thursday night. Alev Kelter’s goal was enough to extend Wisconsin’s unbeaten streak to eight matches and their shutout streak to a whopping seven matches. Kelter’s goal was befitting of this Wisconsin team, as the Alaskan stuck her head where the boots fly to knock home a diving header off of Kodee Williams’ cross. It would turn out to be the Badgers’ only shot on goal of the match, but the defense did the rest for Wisconsin, holding Minnesota’s potent offense to just four shots on goal. Katie Bethke would come closest for the home side, rattling the bar with a free kick in the last ten minutes. After going winless in their first five matches of the season, Wisconsin now finds themselves in the unlikely spot of Big Ten contenders thanks to one of the meanest defenses in the land.
Florida State 1 (Lim 96′) – 0 Wake Forest [aet] [Attendance: 768]
Wake Forest suffered defeat at the hands of Florida State in extra time as they struggled to cope with life without star freshman forward Rachel Nuzzolese, ruled out for the season with a torn ACL suffered against Clemson this past weekend. With Nuzzolese on the sidelines, much of the scoring onus now falls on fellow first-year player Katie Stengel, who was shackled for much of the match and held to just one shot on goal by the stingy FSU defense. By contrast, the Seminoles got a whopping seven shots on goal from Tori Huster, including an overhead kick in the final quarter of an hour that was hacked off the line by Alisha Woodson. But it would need extra time to settle the match with the Demon Deacons. Rachel Lim would spark the celebrations in the first extra frame after playing a one-two with Janice Cayman and then seeing her attempt on goal take a deflection before beating Wake keeper Aubrey Bledsoe. Bledsoe had kept her side in the match up to that point, making nine saves to stifle the Florida State offense, but her side look thoroughly outmatched offensively, only managing three shots on goal through the match. FSU can relish their biggest win of the season to date while opponents Wake Forest will have to hope to be able to produce more offense in matches against NC State and Miami (FL) next weekend.
Maryland 3 (Hastings 3′, Ayinde PK 52′, Hubka 74′) – 2 (Miller 50′, Lenczyk PK 66′) Virginia [Attendance: 517]
In an ACC clash that was as wild as the weather, Maryland overcame conceding two equalizers to prevail over Virginia thanks to Danielle Hubka’s headed goal, 3-2. Hubka would net the winner in the seventy-fourth minute, driving home Olivia Wagner’s corner kick to give the Terps a lead they wouldn’t relinquish over the final quarter of an hour. The home side had raced out to an early lead through Lydia Hastings after teammate Jasmyne Spencer had robbed Maggie Kistner and sent a cross over that was duly volleyed into the back of the net. Virginia would have a chance to equalize a few minutes later, but Colleen Flanagan’s header struck the post. The shellshocked Cavs would go into the break behind 1-0 but would equalize in short order after the restart. Meghan Lenczyk would see her shot deflected off a defender, but Caroline Miller followed the rebound and blasted the ball into the goal to level the score. Two penalties would bring the score to 2-2 when Sade Ayinde converted after Spencer was fouled in the box, but Lenczyk would strike back after Domenica Hodak’s handball in the box, equalizing and setting up Hubka to play the heroine less than ten minutes later. Maryland keeper Yewande Balogun came up huge with a couple of saves on 1v1s against Virginia attackers to keep her side in the match throughout. Balogun would be big in defending the 3-2 lead in the closing minutes as well, saving from Flanagan’s long range bomb off the cross bar and from a close range header by Lenczyk, both in the dying minutes of the contest. The teams survived the remnants of Tropical Storm Nicole which soaked the pitch and the players throughout, but it was Maryland who left the field happiest with three big points in their grasp.
