And so it begins. Word on the street was the very few options (even for big names) were going to get picked by WPS clubs. The Boston Breakers have validated this by announcing the release of four players.
The decline on the options for both Spanish international Laura Del Rio and Australian international Sarah Walsh aren’t all that surprising. Walsh never donned a Breakers shirt as a pair of knee injuries kept her out for the duration of the 2010 season. Del Rio made 21 appearances for the Breakers and will perhaps be best remembered for this lovely goal:

23 year-old defender Kasey Moore had a stellar start to the season and registered her first professional goal in Week 3 of the season. But as the Breakers’ form began to dip, her appearances became more limited. Her position at center-back was eventually supplanted by new arrival Ifeoma Dieke.
Undoubtedly the biggest surprise here is the decline on Stephanie Cox’s option. The left-back started 23 of the Breakers’ 24 games this season and was one-quarter of one of the best back fours in WPS. Cox’s experience with the USWNT goes without saying. At 21, Cox (née Lopez) was the youngest player included on the USWNT’s 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup squad.

Cap space could have been a real determinant but Cox’s release can be seen as a harbinger of things to come this offseason. Little will guaruntee a spot on a WPS squad. Not even 63 USWNT caps.
