Flying High: Nigeria's Super Falcons Advance to the Knockout Phase With Little Interruption

Nigerian striker Perpetua Nkwocha was reportedly planning on hanging her boots up in the coming months. If this is indeed her last hurrah, she sure knows how to leave a lasting impression. Including a pair of goals in Nigeria’s 3-0 victory over Tanzania this morning, the 34 year-old has converted seven goals in three matches.

The ace striker has guided the Super Falcons to the top of Group A. Nigeria has retained their 100% record and have assured qualification into the Knockout phase. They will be joined by hosts South Africa who finish the group with six points, having only lost to Nigeria. Banyana Banyana barely scraped by Tanzania in the opening group match after a late penalty kick proved to be the game winner. The team did, however, defeat Mali 4-0 today.

Nigerian journalist Colin Udoh has provided updates of the tournament and Nigeria’s progress via his Twitter account. Udoh is also the husband of former Super Falcon great Mercy Akide.

The drama and excitement is really only reserved for Group B, however. Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea currently share the spoils at the top of the group with four points apiece. The opening 2-2 draw between the two leaders has set the tone for the rest of the group. Ghana are not far behind with three points while Algeria have already been mathematically eliminated. Cameroon’s surprising 2-1 victory over Ghana puts a return trip to the Women’s World Cup in jeapordy.

And here’s where it gets interesting. Ghana and Equatorial Guinea are set to meet tomorrow while Cameroon will face Algeria. Barring some ridiculous act of divine intervention, Cameroon will defeat Algeria and will thus win the group.

It’s winner take all between Ghana and Equatorial Guinea, as the victorious side will advance to the Knockout stage. If the match ends in a draw and Cameroon does what they’re supposed to do, Equatorial Guinea will advance and Ghana will be eliminated.

Keep in mind, Ghana has appeared in every Women’s World Cup since 1999 while Equatorial Guinea are defending African champions. The 2008 tournament did not fall on a World Cup year and thus, Equatorial Guinea are still looking to represent the country in a FIFA competition for the first time ever.

It all kicks off tomorrow.
