Olympique Lyonnais and Turbine Potsdam are set for a UEFA Women’s Champions League final rematch. Turbine Potsdam edged past Duisburg in the semifinals as Yuki Nagasota scored in the 40th minute to break the 2-2 deadlock from the first leg. Turbine Potsdam dominated the attacking statistics, outshooting Duisburg 22 to 11. The match between the German clubs appeared to be a chippy affair as a total of three yellow cards were produced and 25 fouls were committed.

Duisburg will rue missing out on the final in particular. The 2008-09 UEFA Women’s Cup champions underwent a year of upheaval as manager and former player Marina Voss-Tecklenburg got the sack in February after it became clear that the side was not going to qualify in a Champions League place. The team might find it difficult to break into the top two again as 2010-11 league champions Turbine Potsdam and 2011 DFB-Pokal cup holders FFC Frankfurt will only strengthen their squads this offseason.

Turbine Potsdam could become the first back-to-back winners of the competition since Umea IK won the UEFA Women’s Cup in 2003-04 and 2002-03. Turbine Potsdam are also on the verge of tying Frankfurt with three European cups apiece. The East German side won the first edition of the rebranded UEFA Women’s Champions League last year.

Lyon will be set on revenge after the French team lost to Turbine Potsdam in penalties. Lotta Schelin provided a 2-0 cushion in Lyon’s first leg home match against Arsenal. Arsenal – fresh off their FA WSL debut on Wednesday – staged a second half fightback but it was too late. Lyon won the match 3-2 thanks to a brace from Eugenie Le Sommer and a first half stoppage time goal from Lara Dickenmann – who also provided two assists in the first leg. Goals by Julie Fleeting and Ellen White were not enough to overcome the five goal deficit, three of which were away goals.

The final will be held on May 26 in London. Craven Cottage – home ground of English Premier League side Fulham – will play host.
