It was a surprising turnout for the G2 Women’s MMA Summit this weekend. Women from all across the country flew and drove in to take seminars from some of the best female fighters on the planet.
The summit opened at the Throwdown Training Center with Michele Gutierrez’s boxing seminar. Part of it was taped for an upcoming story for CNN.
Then world jiu-jitsu champ Lana Stefanac held a BJJ clinic. The next generation of fighters learned innovative submissions and did some grappling to test their skills.
Brazilian Olympic wrestling team member Stefanie Guitmaraes was next, and she put on a shoot wrestling clinic. The attendees learned about creating opportunities against the fence and on the mat.
The night was followed up by a trip to Tuff-n-uff Amateur MMA at the Cox Pavilion. Three fights were held and two new champions crowned. Jessamyn Duke took home a second belt (her first being the AAMMA title) as she defeat Autumn Richardson via unanimous decision in what was a hotly contested match. Richardson took down Duke at the openings of all three rounds, but Duke had many submission attempts off her back, and from Richardson’s back.
Katherine Davis & Kaiyana Rain go to majority draw in their match for the 115vpound title. Davis was deducted point for a headbutt, which several thought was accidental. Rain left the ring with a mouse under her left eye and a mouse above her right. The draw means that a rematch will be in order to crown a new 115 pound champion.
In the co-main event, a dominant Marciea Allen defeated Kari Lichtenwalner by unanimous decision for the Tuff 135 title. Allen outstruck Lichtenwalner with some huge power punches, which knocked her head around. Cyborg Santos presented the belt to Allen.
Sam Wilson presented a belt for Mia Hayes, who is battling cancer as we speak. The Might Mia Hayes belt will be a yearly tradition for the most inspirational fighter.
Day 2 will see Cyborg, Shayna Baszler, Carla Esparza, and Julie Kedzie teach the attendees more all around skills in the cage. Stay tuned…
