The Calgary Combative Sports Commission has two messes to clean up after the Sheila Bird and Kim Couture fight this past Friday.
After Couture was choked out with a scissors choke by Bird Friday, it took referee several seconds before he stopped the fight. CCSC Chairman Shirley Stunzi stated to MMA Weekly that the investigation in the bout’s stoppage is underway and that no further comment would be made until its conclusion.
In an interview with Fallout MMA this weekend, Couture stated she “had been through worse in fights” and was fine.
Another incident that came up involved Couture’s suspension by the New Jersey Athletic Commission from this past October. MMA Junkie reported that Couture was medically suspended indefinitely due to strikes to the head in her match with Munah Holland Oct. 23 on the Ring of Combat card in Atlantic City, and could only be cleared after a CT-scan. Couture had surgery this past February to repair a broke jaw, and had a clean CT scan following. Her doctor faxed medical documents to the NJSAC to clear her to fight the day before the fight, but it was too late for the NSJAC to clear Couture to fight.
CCSC was aware of this and proceeded with the fight. Couture is still under medical suspension from the NSJAC and could face more disciplinary action. The CCSC may also see some sanctions from the Association of Boxing Commissions for allowing the fight to happen.
The CCSC will be putting out a press release on both incidents when their investigations have concluded.
