Bellator fighter Jessica Aguilar has come a long way in 5 years.

Since losing her very first match to #3 Unified ranked Lisa Ward in 2006, Aguilar has had a stellar 11-4 record and made it to the semi-finals of the Bellator 115 pound tournament last year. In what is one of the match of the year candidates, Aguilar got a split decsion win over fellow ranked fighter Carla Esparza this past June. This is the first time back for the #2 Unified ranked fighter since then, recovering from a foot injury.

Prepared to face one of her mentors and avenge her first loss, Aguilar talked to us about the rematch and her extensive training camp for the fight.

Wombat Sports: It’s been a long road since your split decision win over Carla Esparza this summer – how has the recovery process been?

Jessica Aguilar: Thank goodness I am a quick healer. I had a great surgeon and it went very well. It is an unfortunate part of MMA but injuries are inevitable.

Wombat: You have expanded your training camp with the South Miami Performance Center , and Palm Beach Boxing to compliment your
ATT training. How has it been combining all these skills in your fighting?

Aguilar: The training for this camp has been fantastic! My endurance training has never been so complete, I am ready for war.

W.S.: You mentioned that you admire Lisa Ellis and getting this rematch was something you wanted for a while. Looking back at that first match, how do you feel you have grown as a fighter?

JAG: It is really comparing night and day, I literally had 1 week of training! Now I have grappled in over 50 matches,15 MMA bouts, traveled the world competing and trained with the finest coaches in the sport. There is no comparison, back then was all heart today it is heart and so much more.

W.S.: You are now a Viacom employee now. What are your thoughts on the purchase of Bellator?

JAG: Viacom is obviously a huge company with a lot of resources behind them which will enable Bellator to achieve even more visibility than they currently enjoy. I think it is a great marriage.

W.S.: You helped Maryianna Kheyfets train for her win recently, and it seems that the women fighters at ATT, especially in Coconut Creek has been expanding by leaps and bounds. How is it to be a mentor to some of these up and coming fighters?

JAG: It is really great to see these girls progress and helping them fine tune their games to the point where they are now good training for me. The fact that these girls respect me is an honor and when I fight I feel I am representing them too.

A contest is currently going on to get her rematch with Ward televised on MTV 2 (we encourage you tweet @BjornRebney that you want to see this fight on TV). If for some reason this doesn’t happen, it will be streamed on Spike.com.

Jessica Aguilar would like to thank her sponsors - Boca Tanning & Jen Boronico; Chris Liuzzo of “ONLY ONE FIGHT SHOP” in Pompano Beach, FL, and Kimurawear MMA Clothing.
