Talented kickboxer Felice “Lil’ Bulldog” Herrig put her improving wrestling skills to good use tonight in a featured women’s bout at Xtreme Fighting Championships 17: “Apocalypse” in Jackson, Tennessee. Herrig earned a clear-cut Unanimous Decision victory over “Little” Patricia Vidonic.
With takedowns in all three rounds, Herrig was able to keep her opponent pinned down on the mat for prolonged stretches and she was effective with short strikes from the top. Vidonic pulled off an impressive sweep in round one, but Herrig controlled the remainder of the bout to take the decision.
Herrig (6-4-0) traded body kicks with Vidonic (6-3-0) early on and followed with a quick flurry of punches. Vidonic responded by clinching in search of a takedown. Herrig defended well and stayed on her feet until referee Gary Copeland called for a break. Herrig landed punches and attempted a head kick, which prompted Vidonic to clinch again. Herrig landed knees to the body and Vidonic replied with two to the face. Herrig took Vidonic down in the final minute, but Vidonic used an impressive sweep into mount. Herrig regained top position before the end of the close round.
The remainder of the fight was all Herrig. She took Vidonic down in round two and landed short strikes from the top to set up a move to side control. Vidonic attempted an inverted triangle choke and an armbar from the bottom, but Herrig easily evaded and stood up. Vidonic followed and ate a combination from Herrig, who used a body-lock takedown to get the fight back down to the mat. More short punches scored for Herrig as the round came to a close.
Vidonic, likely knowing that she was down on the scorecards, rushed forward with punches in the final round. Herrig tagged her with some nice counterstrikes and Vidonic clinched. A standing elbow scored for Vidonic, but Herrig broke away. She took Vidonic down and moved to mount, then punched from the top. Vidonic managed to scramble to her feet, but Herrig caught a kick and took her down once more. Herrig landed punches and elbows from the top and avoided a late Kimura attempt.
All three judges scored the bout in favour of Herrig, with only one giving Vidonic the close first round. Herrig now gets back on the winning track after a tough loss in December. Vidonic has dropped back-to-back fights after putting together a six-fight winning streak.
Winner: Felice Herrig by Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28) after three rounds. She improves to 6-4-0.
