The present and future of women’s combat sports coverage on London for two weeks, and proved a strong state of women athletes.

Women’s boxing came to what was a rock star reception at the games. The energy levels were high as the women proved their foothold in the sweet science. Boxers like Katie Taylor of Ireland, Marie Kom of India, Nicola Adams of the U.K., and Claressa Sheilds of the U.S., showed true skill and aggressiveness in the ring.

Japan proved dominate in women’s wrestling once again; crowning 2 three time gold medalists in Kaori Icho and Saori Yoshida. The future of the nation’s wrestling team, Hitomi Obara, got her first gold.

Taekwondo saw multiple countries medal; from France, to China, to the sport’s birthplace of Korea; all found some success.

Same can be said about Judo, with a lot of new young faces to continue the tradition in what has on the verge of breaking out as a popular sport.

On the overall medal count, France takes the title of having the most combat athletes to take home hardware with seven. (Most came from judo.) USA and China tie for second and were able to have an athlete medal in all four sports. Japan and Russia tie for the fourth spot with 5 medals.

The race has started for the Rio Olympics in 2016. Girls from all over the world will hopefully have gotten inspired to start training in combat sports so they can become Olympic champions.

Another hope is that submission grappling will be added for 2012. With a campaign having already started two years ago, we may see a fifth combat sport added.
