Two of the top female welterweights in boxing duked it out in Denmark, with a new possible opponent for Holly Holm emerging.
WBA, WBC, and WBO welterweight champ Cecilia Braekhus of Norway retained her world titles this past weekend, defeating Anne Sophie Mathis with a 10-round unanimous decision (97-93 all cards). This is the first time Mathis has loss two straight.
The undefeated Braekhus (21-0) used her technical skill to out box the more powerful Mathis, which many claiming Braekus being the top fighter in the division.
“This is the happiest day of my life,” Braekus stated in the post-fight press conference. “Mathis was very strong, the toughest opponent of my career, but I found a way to beat her. This is my biggest win ever.”
When asked about a possible Holm versus Braekus fight, Mathis stated:
“Braekhus is better than Holm. She is faster, has better movement and better boxing skills.”
The big question is will this fight happen. Holm’s management has insisted that her fights happen in New Mexico, and a huge debate about ring size nixed a possible rubber match with Mathis. The fight isn’t out of the realm of possibility if Braekus’s management agrees to the terms.
Only time will tell.
For now, you can watch the last rounds of the match from this weekend here.
