The last pro bouts of 2012 were on opposite sides of the planet and had ranking implications.
New Years Eve started in Japan, as #1 Unified featherweight Marloes Coenen (21-5) step back into a Japanese ring to take on #8 ranked Fiona Muxlow (6-2) at DREAM MMA. Muxlow had come in on only a week and a half notice for the fight, and was riding a three fight win streak. Coenen’s knees damaged Muwlow early as Muxlow was able to sweep to top position. Coenen started working submissions, with Muxlow defending an armbar, then a triangle choke. Coenen would transition to a straight armbar to get the tap at 3:31 in round 1. Coenen gets her ninth armbar victory.

Later on in the day in Dublin, Ireland, Finnish fighter and #6 strawweight Katja Kankaanpää remains undefeated and gains her biggest win of her career as she defeated the formerly ranked Ais “The Bash” Daly at Cage Warriiors 51. It was Kankaanpää’s wrestling that proved to be a factor with her getting dominate positions over Daly time and time again. Kankaanpää is now a considerable contend in the flyweight division.
