Boxing champ Holly Holm has decided to permanently make the switch to MMA.

Holm (32-2-3 boxing; 3-0 MMA) announced the decision to drop out of boxing Monday at a media luncheon at the Albuquerque International Airport. The official switch will happen after her final boxing match with Mary McGee May 11 at the Route 66 Casino in Albuquerque, NM.

Holm currently holds the IBA and WBF boxing titles and was looking to face WBO/WBA/WBC champ Cecilia Braekhus this fall. The announcement put the kibosh on the epic encounter. Braekhus told a Norwegian website that a rematch with Anne Sophie Mathis would most likely be the next fight for her.

Holm’s transition to MMA has been relatively smooth with three TKO’s to her credit. Her latest outing at Bellator saw her outstrike Katie Merrill to a second round win. The publicity for the fight and social media reaction may have been a big part of the swtich, as well as fighting more often, and doing the switch while the 31 year old is still in her prime.

InvictaFC has shown interest in Holm, and a possible slot for her to fight on the InvictaFC 6 card is a great possibility. Her management team has also held MMA cards in the past, so don’t expect Holm to wait for a fight.

On a side not, Holm would be inducted into the New Mexico Boxing Hall of Fame in June.
