When Jessica Aguilar got the call that she would be the final opponent for Megumi Fujii, one word came to mind, “Honored”.

The current #1 ranked strawweight sees Fujii as an inspiration ever since she started the sport. She will see first hand as her favorite fighter retires from the sport when they face off at Vale Tudo Japan in Tokyo October 5.

“Fujii is a legend of the sport and will remain one of my idols,” Aguilar expressed. “Her accomplishments, what she’s done for the sport and who she is as a person will continue to inspire me throughout my journey in this sport.”

Aguilar won their first outing by unanimous decision in an action packed match that could have went either way. Aguilar wants to bring that type of fight to Japan.

The last time Aguilar was in Japan, the 2011 earthquake shook the country. She didn’t get to fight that time, but she looks forward to returning to “The Land of the Rising Sun”. 

“I’m blessed to have the opportunity to return to Japan to do what I love and to give the Japanese fans the best of me. This fight against Fujii will be the best of my career. I will give her and the Japanese fans everything I have been training 8 years for.”

With her recent release from Bellator, Aguilar states she hasn’t thought about her future in the sport. 

“It was bittersweet as Bellator gave me the opportunity to make my dreams come true of becoming #1 in the world in my weight class. Presently I am focused on this fight with Fujii.”

Whatever the future hold for Aguilar, she will be the only one to say that she retired the legendary Megumi Fujii.

Aguilar would like to thank her team at ATT, friends and family and everyone who has believed in her and continue to helped support her on her journey to becoming and remaining the #1 straw weight in the world.
