Welcome to the Fightergirls column brought to you by your source for women’s mma gear and clothing Fightergirls.com. Here is the news for this week.

In breaking news, one of the best fights to happen so far this year happened Friday night, as #2 ranked 135 pounder Roxanne Modafferi upset #3 ranked 125 pounder and top p4p fighter Tara LaRosa via a razor close split decision at the Moosin MMA event in Worchester, MA.

Modafferi won the first round with aggressive striking and almost has LaRosa before the buzzer. Round two saw a more aggressive LaRosa later in the round, with some effective striking a takedown of Modafferi. With one round a piece going into the third period, in what was the moment of the match, Modafferi got a triangle choke on LaRosa, and was able to hold it in for a full 90 seconds before transitioning to an armbar. Modafferi and LaRosa grappled until the final buzzer. Modafferi takes the decision 30-27, 28-29, and 29-28.

LaRosa defeated Modafferi in their first match two year ago via decision, and the two will most likely have a rubber match sometime next year. With the win, Modafferi is in line for a shot at #1 ranked 135 pounder Sarah Kaufman's Strikeforce title. It is speculated that the match will happen July 24 on Showtime.

Top fighter Rosi Sexton's protege Sarah Moras defeated Helena Martin by TKO (Punches) at 3:40 of round two at CWFC 37: "Right To Fight." Sexton was out of the card due to an unknown reason.

#6 ranked fighter Cindy Dandois

Our friends over at MMA Rising talked to Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker this week about the status of #6 ranked 145 pounder Cindy Dandois. He confirmed that Dandois is not to signed to Strikeforce as of yet, but they have been watching her matches at the M-1 Global cards. It is a good possibility she will be in Strikeforce this year but Coker says that Dandois will most likely get one or two matches with Strikeforce before being considered for a title match with 145 pound champion Cyborg Santos. Thanks MMA Rising for that report.

MMA Fighter Jan Finney

We got an interview with Jan Finney, only a few days after she was announced as #1 ranked 145 pounder Cyborg Santo's opponent for her Strikeforce title on June 26.

Finney feels she is prepared, as she is on a five fight win streak and her last loss was a 3 round decision to # 2 ranked Erin Toughill a year and a half ago.

“I've been fighting pretty much every two months since October. I'm ready," stated Finney. "Each time I feel like I am getting a little more momentum. I know she's tough, but I'm a competitor. I'm going to give her my best.”
