Vidonic tries for the choke on Brotherton Courtesy Dave Bottomley

Patricia Vidonic was able to secure a victory over Angelica Brotherton at the Art of Fight card in Tampa this weekend. Fightergirls reporter Dave Bottomley was on site, and was able to break down the fight.

In the first round, Brotherton took the upper hand in striking, until they hit the ground and Vidonic was able to get a rear naked choke attempt in right before the bell. In round two, Vidonic was again able to get a rear naked choke attempt, but wasn’t able to finish. Brotherton came back in the third with huge striking and took the final round. Vidonic took the split decision victory 29-28, 29-28, and 27-30.

Vidonic’s next fight will be on the April 15 in Clovis, NM.

Evans finishes Gonsolez Courtesy CageSports MMA

In the only other pro fight this weekend, Natalie Evans defeats Jennifer Gonsalez via TKO at :19 of round one at CageSport 13 in Tacoma.

Rosi Sexton (left) and Roxanne Modafferi (right) battle Saturday

In what could be a candidate for match of the year, #3 ranked 125 pounder Rosi Sexton will face #5 ranked 135 pounder Roxanne Modafferi at 125 pounds at the Cage Warriors event in England Saturday.

It won’t be for Sexton’s title, but it is expected to be a smart and calculated fight that should bring the house down. Sexton is coming off a second round tko win over #7 ranked Sally Krumdiack. Modafferi is coming off a loss to former Strikeforce champ Sarah Kaufman, and will be her first foray into the 125 pound division. She should be on weight going into the fight.

Check out Fightergirls on Twitter Saturday for complete results.

Fighter Jessica Aguilar

It was expected that #6 ranked Jessica Aguilar would be competing this weekend, but GForce MMA has yet to secure her an opponent. MMARising reported this week that GFroce had set Simona Soukupova as Aguilar’s opponent for Saturday in Michigan, but Soukupova got injured just hours after she signed. We will update on Fightergirls.com this week.

However, it has been announced this week that Aguilar is set to face fellow Bellator tournament participant Carla Esparza in June at the Hard Rock in Hollywood, FL . Both agreed to the fight, but has not been signed officially by Bellator.

Shana Olsen (left) and Elaina Maxwell set to square off in April

After her loss to Julia Budd, Shana Olsen is hoping to redeem herself as she takes on Elaina Maxwell at the Crowbar MMA card Apr. 28 in North Dakota. Maxwell is also looking for redemption after losing to Shayna Baszler this past November. The contest will be at 145 pounds.

Fighter Erin Toughill

Erin Toughill has announced her return to the cage April 9 after a two year absence. She is set to fight at the Freestyle Cage Fighting event in Shawnee, OK at the Firelake Grand Casino. It has been a rocky road this past year, as Toughill has been unable to secure a fight after many opportunities fell through for one reason or another. Her opponent for the FCF event has yet to be announced.

Another 145 pounder Cindy Dandois will face Jorina Baars March 19 at Staredown MMA event in Holland.

WBC Champ Christy Martin to return the ring in Vegas

After being stabbed and shot this past November, pro boxer Christy Martin is set to return to the ring to face Dakota Stone in a rematch Mar. 12 in Vegas at the MGM Grand. Martin got a majority decision over Stone in September 2009, in which she won the WBC Super welterweight title. The fight is apart of the undercard of the Miguel Coat toe vs. Ric-ar-do May-or-ga boxing card on Showtime pay-per-view.

In the only other pro match this week

#9 ranked 115 pounder Seo Hee Ham faces Saori Ishioka at DEEP: 52 Impact in Japan.
