Roller Derby is spreading like wildfire across the nation as teams are starting in smaller and bigger cities. Montana is no exception.

In a year’s span, four teams have former in the Treasure State, including the newly developed Hel’z Belles of Helena.

Over the weekend, two of the state’s other teams, the Electric City Roller Grrrlz out of Great Falls, and the Billings Roller Derby Dames went at it in the first roller derby matches in Helena. The Lewis and Clark Fairgrounds was standing room only as Billings tromped Great Falls 250-112.

The Hel’z Belles are still training for their first match this fall, but will be doing exhibition matches throughout the summer. They did do a demonstration of derby for the fans in attendance, plus made a proper introduction of the team to the city. I got a chance to talk to AK-Dre, one of the Hel’z Belles, about the formation of the team, what the team means for her, and how many different women have formed a soon to be solid team.
