Award department:

Cal's Tierra Rogers will receive teh Maggie Dixon Courage Award. Great choice. And it's even harder not to respect this young woman if you follow her on twitter.

Game department:

The Louisville Cardinals are in Las Vegas for business, not fun.

Talk department:

Seattle Storm Coach Brian Agler talked to the West Seattle girls basketball team this week. The most pertinent gem of this piece:

Coach Agler enlisted the seniors to lead the other girls. and to help implement the steps in a three=point plan he laid out for success: Work ethic, attitude, and togetherness. One of the main tenets of the plan is “no drama,” because according to Coach Agler, “drama will kill a girls-basketball team.”

Wiser words were never spoken.

Tournament department:

In Southern California, high school students are out of class, and winter break tournaments are on tap:

Oaks Christian Holiday Hardwood Invitational.

Best of the West at Ayala.

Santa Barbara High School Tournament of Champions.

Costa Mesa Winter Classic.

Bonus:

New York Liberty Coach John Whisenant is bringing back some former staffers to round out his new staff.
