A sell-out crowd of over 7,300 women’s basketball fans witnessed Stanford (9-2) put an end to the longest streak in Division I basketball history. The Cardinal beat Connecticut (12-1) 71-59 Thursday night in game where they never let the No. 1 team lead and ended the Huskies run at 90 straight victories. It was UConn’s first loss since the Huskies dropped an 82-73 decision to Stanford on April 6, 2008. Connecticut had defeated the Cardinal three times since that loss.

Stanford continued its own home-court winning streak, extending it to 52. The Cardinal came out of the gate on a 17-4 run and never looked back even as UConn crept closer. At one point, the Huskies trailed by 13, its largest since the Huskies trailed LSU by 23 points on March 26, 2007. UConn star Maya Moore went scoreless for over 10 minutes and finally made a trey at 10:52. She only scored 14 for the entire matchup, below her game average.

The teams went into the half 34-30. UConn, who also trailed Stanford in last year’s national championship, did not roar back as usual. Instead, Stanford remained on top for the entire second half to the joy of the crowd which included former players and notables such as former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and retired Navy Commander and activist Zoe Dunning.

Jeanette Pohlen made five 3-pointers and ended the game with a career-high 31 points for the Cardinal (9-2). Kelly Faris led the Huskies with 19.
