About a month ago I wondered why Coach Vivian Stringer hadn't yet signed a contract extension with Rutgers, after she said in February that such negotiations were in final stages.
Today it was announced that the contract was finally signed, but the details are missing:
The 66-year-old Stringer and Rutgers have agreed to terms on a multi-year extension for her to remain at the helm of the school's women's basketball program, according to sources. Neither Stringer, whose contract was due to expire June 30, nor athletics director Julie Hermann were available Monday for comment.
The terms of the deal, which still needs to be approved by the Board of Governors per school policy, are not known, though it is likely that Stringer is taking a pay cut – the significance of which depends on the difficulty of reaching any incentives involved. She has been earning $1.035 million per year in base salary plus annual supplement and deferred compensation prior to other incentives since July 1, 2011.
I had heard a rumor that the school wanted Stringer to retire, and that they wanted to basically let the women's basketball program go. Could the mystery around Stringer's new contract mean there was some truth to these rumors?
