Tara Quinn-Smith, Emilie’s Run defending champion, is unable to return to defend her title due to some nagging minor running injuries. Tara notified race director Ken Parker on Monday that it is highly unlikely that she will return.
With no former winners coming back the race favourite would appear to be Mary Davies, a New Zealander now living in Ottawa. She won the Montreal Half-Marathon in April in a PB time 1:14:45.2 and the Sporting Life 10K in Toronto in 33:08.8. She a PB for the Half-Marathon at Mississauga on May 16th – a time of 1:14:04. – and in May ran 2:39:29 in the Ottawa Marathon placing 7th female. Mary has a PB of 16:16.54 for 5000m set while at Oklahoma State on a track scholarship.
Emily Tallen of Kingston was second in Emilie’s Run last year in 16:33.7, third in the 2007 Emilie’s Run in 16:55.2 and placed second in 2006. In April of 2010 she was the first Canadian in the Montreal Half-Marathon in a time of 1:15:41.2. Emily ran 34:11 in the Vancouver Sun Run on May 9th and 35:23.9 in the Ottawa Race Weekend 10K.
Paula Wiltse of Brockville has won the masters classification every year since 2007 (she did not run the 2006 race) and has placed 2nd twice and 4th once. In the fall of 2009 she was 4th woman and 2nd Masters in the Casino Niagara Half-Marathon in 1:20:23.1 and 17:22 for 5K in the Run for Hospice Can/Am5K in Rochester, NY. In the 2010 Limetsone 5K in Kingston she was first in 17:33.3. Paula placed 3rd woman – and first Masters (40-45) – in the Sporting Life 10K in Toronto. Paula ran 17:27.6 in the recent Freihofer’s 5K Race for Women placing 3rd Master (40-44).
While there is over $7700 in prize money for the top individuals and teams, the race is open to all women and is designed to be a
celebration of women’s running in memory of a Canadian Olympian.
There is also a 1K run for children 12 and under and they will receive free admission to the Aviation Museum
The course record of 16:15.7 was set by Tara Quinn-Smith in 2009. In 2008 Paula Wiltse of Kingston set a Canadian Masters (40+) record of 17:02.0 while placing second overall to Nicole Stevenson’s 16:57.6.
The 2009 race delivered six of the top ten fastest Open women’s 5K times and the TOP 5 Master’s times in Ontario .
The race offers several unique features to enhance the participants’ experience such as timing mats at each kilometer and the race numbers 1 through 50 designate runners who placed 1 through 50 in the previous year’s race. There are $100 primes for the leader at each of the first four kilometres.
The race is sanctioned by the Ontario Track and Field Association and the distance is certified. The course was repaved last summer.
CHEO – the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, is the official charity of the event.
The race is sponsored by the Runner’s Web (www.runnersweb.com), the Ottawa Citizen, Majic100, New Balance Ottawa, iRun Magazine, eLoad, RunningSkirts.com, Booster Juice, Zoom Photo, Taste of Nature, Vitamin Water, Goodlife Fitness Clubs, Bagel Bagel and Ottawa Outdoors Magazine and is organized by Somersault Promotions (www.somersault.ca).
Emilie’s Run is part of the Champions Challenge Series and the Road Warrior Series.
More than 500 women are expected for this year’s race. Last year 364 women completes the 5K run with 143 finishing the 1K run for children 12 and under.
Last year the Running Skirts Team from Toronto won the team championship with Dana Buchanan of the Ottawa Lions the top local finisher in 17:48.6.

About Emilie’s Run
In 2006 the Runner’s Web founded the RunnersWeb5K.com Race for Women, Canada’s only women’s-only race at the time. In 2007 the race was renamed Emilie’s Run – The Emilie Mondor Memorial 5K Race for Women in memory of Emilie Mondor, a pioneer in women’s running in Canada and the first Canadian woman to run sub 15:00 for 5K. Emilie was an Athens Olympian. She had moved to Ottawa to start training for the marathon with the goal of going to the Beijing Olympics in that event.
