USAOutdoorTFChampionshipsEDITOR'S NOTE: AnnGaff and LesleyHiggins are writing these previews for the USA Track & Field Championships, taking place this weekend in Eugene, OR, based on their firsthand Track & Field experience. Gaffigan and Higgins competed against each other in college, with Gaffigan representing the Nebraska Huskers and Higgins representing the Colorado Buffs. Both women competed last year in the 3000m Steeplechase at the Olympic Trials. This year, the two are spectators-from-afar of the USATF Championships/World Team Trials; Higgins is out with a broken foot and Gaffigan gave birth to a baby girl in May.

Final on Sunday, June 28 at 12:10pm

Top-10 entry throws:

Jessica Cosby 71.15
Loree Smith 70.64
Amber Campbell 70.61
Erin Gilreath 70.19
Britney Henry 69.69
Stevi Large 68.08
Kristal Yush 67.78
Kelly Godsey 66.99
Sarah Stevens 66.32
Amy Haapanen 65.26

My picks:

1. Jessica Cosby
2. Amber Campbell
3. Loree Smith

Jessica Cosby won her second career U.S. title in the hammer throw at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, topping the field with an Olympic Trials record throw of 70.72m/232-0. She registered no mark at the 2008 Olympics. She registered her 71.15m entry throw this season. Loree Smith's 70.64m throw is also from this season as is Amber Campbell's 70.61m and Gilreath's 70.19m. With the first four throwers all in top form this season, I have chosen to go with experience. Campbell was 2008 Olympic Trials runner-up and is a three-time USA Indoor champion ('07, '08, '09). Smith was 4th at 2008 Olympic Trials and secured her spot on the Olympic team because the third-place finisher Sarah Veress lacked the “A” standard.
