This morning, 1984 Olympic gold medalist Joan Benoit-Samuelson ran yet another sub-2:50 marathon. She has now broken 2:50 in every decade that the marathon has been an Olympic event for women. Her personal best on this Chicago course was her 18-year American record time of 2:21:21, run in 1985.

Her time this year of 2:47:50 was just short of the 2:46:00 qualifying time that is required to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Trails. Of course, she has an automatic entry into the event by virtue of being an Olympian and Olympic Trials champion, but she was still striving to hit the qualifying standard.

She still has about 14 months to hit the standard - the qualifying window closes 30 days prior to the January 2012 event in Houston. I, for one, really hopes she takes another shot.

And then she ran the Tufts 10k the next day! (Fast too!) What a tough and talented woman!
