What an exciting day!

Kim Smith almost proved me right, as she was my pick for the win, but was sidelined before 20 miles with cramping in her right calf. Her move may have looked risky, but her halfway split was pretty close to the pace of the winning time. There will be a major marathon win sometime in Kim’s running career.

Desi Davila did exactly what I expected, she was in the chase pack, then she let them gap her as they surged, and then she caught back up to them when it made sense to her. Of course, I didn’t expect her to take the lead with several miles to go, so I ate my words a little when I said she never threw caution to the wind. It was definitely a gutsy race and very exciting to watch.

I am embarassed that I totally neglected the eventual winner, Caroline Kilel, in my pre-race recap. She came in with a personal best of 2:23 and there was no reason that she was not a contender. Caroline and Desi threw move after move at each other in the final miles, and she ultimately prevailed to capture a major win and a new personal best.
