COLUMBUS, Ohio – Just like all her previous fights Ronda Rousey finished with a first round arm bar. She is the new Strikeforce Bantamweight Champion when referee Mike Matheny stopped the bout when Miesha Tate’s arm broke.
Unlike her previous bouts Rousey went beyond the one minute mark in a fight that got the crowd on their feet from the very beginning.
Tate charged at Rousey with her fists flying. While some connected this closed the distance and allowed Rousey to get the fight to the ground. After defending the early arm bar attempt it became a war of position in the clinch and on the ground. In the case of wrestling vs. judo, judo won tonight.
Rousey stated, “The first arm bar I was working toward wasn’t deep but I knew I had her on the second one. I’m just very happy to be the champion and excited for what’s next.”
“I definitely wasn’t expecting Miesha to be as technical as she was on the ground. I tried to get in her head over the last few months because I prefer to fight emotional opponents,” said the new Strikeforce champion. “I wanted her on edge so that she would be more likely to come at me. She came in swinging and that’s what I was expecting.”
Miesha Tate put on a blitzkrieg in an attempt to overwhelm the challenger, but it was for not. Rousey claims the victory and the gold. A new superstar is born, a new era has begun.
