by bfranek posted November 7, 2010 at 11:27pm
Even though it was short, Team Camp 2010 was a TON of fun. Being new to the program, it was also extremely valuable to learn about the OTC’s resources and get to know my teammates better- I can’t imagine a better team bonding experience!

Letting Go of Speed
by Run Girl Run posted November 3, 2010 at 5:49pm
One of the most frustrating things about marathon training is feeling myself getting slower and slower.
On my long runs, I know that's going to happen. There's no way I could run 20 miles at a 9 minute pace. But I can definitely manage a 10 minute per ...more

Trusting the process
by Byline to Finish Line posted November 3, 2010 at 1:37pm
Honestly, I thought my coach was crazy. Did he just meet me?
In discussing my track workout for the week, he noted that the last time I did 600 meter intervals, I noted they were hard. So what does he do? Give me faster times to run.
“I want you to go...more

by bfranek posted November 3, 2010 at 12:05pm
So far training has been pretty much as I expected. I am running more than I ever have in my life but I am also not doing anything else really.
Organized practices have been drills and conditioning- more than I have ever done on those too. Conditi...more

To be or not to be (coached): Is that the question?
by Endurance Meg posted November 1, 2010 at 11:18pm
I’ve been chatting with some friends recently, on twitter and in person, about the pros and cons of hiring a coach. For years I’ve been on my own, and I’ve been really psyched about it. I have a fairly solid background in developing and executing th...more

Why I love swimming with the grannies
by Byline to Finish Line posted October 29, 2010 at 1:26pm
There’s something unique about swimming at the YMCA.
Because of my work schedule, I end up at the pool at odd hours where it’s often me and a crew of senior citizens. Some of them swim. Some of them walk in the pool. A number of them take one of the ...more

The progression of a track workout
by Byline to Finish Line posted October 28, 2010 at 12:21pm
Never before had my coach warned me about a workout. But on our weekly Monday call, he particularly noted the run intervals he would give me to do this week. “I’m warning you now, it’s going to be hard,” he said.
Gulp.
Seriously, all track worko...more

My favorite fall running gear
by Endurance Meg posted October 26, 2010 at 3:00pm
The temperatures are dropping and the November winds are gusting. Yes, it’s not yet November. But it’s the U.P. And that means, gusts of up to 50mph.
Oh yes, I will miss this place when I move. But until then, I am really excited about doing some ser...more

20 Miles in the Books
by Run Girl Run posted October 25, 2010 at 3:40pm
This past weekend was my 20 miler -- my longest run of marathon training.
I treated it like it was a race. I ate a delicious pasta dinner the night before, laid out everything I would need, crawled into bed at a normal time and was ready to go when my al...more

At the heart of it all, joy and gratitude
by Byline to Finish Line posted October 25, 2010 at 1:18pm
Ambient light made the high school track a bit less scary on the early fall Saturday morning. There by myself to complete my speed workout of the week, the plan was to get it done (a) before I had to go to work on a busy college-sports weekend and (b) bef...more

The art and science of the run
by Byline to Finish Line posted October 23, 2010 at 1:33pm
It was a beautiful, crisp, windy autumn morning. Again. And my 5-mile easy run felt glorious, in part, because I ignored the science of the day and ran how I felt, in gratitude and joy.
But that doesn’t mean the science of the run doesn’t have it’s...more

by Run Girl Run posted October 21, 2010 at 2:33pm

Craving a Change of Pace
by Run Girl Run posted October 8, 2010 at 3:18pm
After three solid months of waking up at 4:45 a.m. for my training runs for the RnR half, I'm starting to crave a change of pace. I was so rigid with that training plan, that I need to re-introduce some flexibility to my running.
While I will always be a...more
