A fractured foot has forced Brazilian standout Amanda “Lioness of the Ring” Nunes out of a planned 135-pound women’s matchup against Julie “Fireball” Kedzie at Strikeforce: “Overeem vs Werdum” on June 18th in Dallas, Texas. MMADieHards.com was first to report on Nunes’s withdrawal from the fight.
Nunes made an instant impact in her Strikeforce debut in January when she knocked out Julia “The Jewel” Budd in just 14 seconds. She had planned to return to her natural weight class of 135 pounds to face Kedzie, but has now been forced off of the card. The bout may be rescheduled for a later date.
As a result of Nunes’s (6-1-0) injury, Kedzie (16-8-0)* will most likely be removed from the card as well. Kedzie’s trainer, Greg Jackson, told The Fight Show with Mauro Ranallo today that he did not believe that Kedzie would be competing for Strikeforce on June 18th, but remained hopeful that a bout between Kedzie and Nunes could be rebooked once Nunes has recovered. Kedzie had been set to make her Strikeforce debut in the fight. She previously fought twice for the former EliteXC promotion, but suffered defeats in both outings.
With Strikeforce Women’s Middleweight Champion Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos still without a contract, the future of the Strikeforce women’s divisions remains uncertain following the purchase of the organisation by Zuffa subsidiary Forza, LLC. It is expected that a Strikeforce Women’s Welterweight Championship bout between Marloes “Rumina” Coenen and Miesha “Takedown” Tate will take place in July or August, however, and former champion Sarah Kaufman may also compete on an upcoming card.
*Note: Kedzie’s credited record does not include her September 24, 2010 Ultimate Women Challenge bout; the result of which remains under wraps due to ongoing litigation.
