A blog that addresses the tough questions in sport that are important to women and girls.

I received two very informative comments on my article about lingerie football players being real athletes that made me question some of my earlier comments.

kaytbates says: If they wanted to make money and play football, there are definitely other leagues they could play in and get paid. The Women's Football Alliance has over 60 teams across the country, and they paid their athletes to play, and not trapse around in their underwear. All this league provides is a legal peep show for the men who frequent these games. Check out the Women's Football Alliance at http://www.wfafootball.com/

My attention was also drawn to the Western Women's Canadian Football League: http://www.wwcfl.com/p/about-us.html.

In my initial article I asked the question about whether or not the women of the LFL are REAL athletes. I noted that these women are usually extremely athletic, and often come from NCAA backgrounds. I mention that one reason why women join the LFL is lack of professional opportunities for women after college. While I still believe that these women are athletes (although extremely misguided ones that are definitely not acting in the best interest of women's sports), the two leagues mentioned above provide much more physical and legitimate alternatives to women that want to play tackle football. In the case of the the WFL they actually PAY THEIR PLAYERS. The women of the LFL have no excuses. There are alternatives if playing a sport is really what they want to do.

Members of the WWCFL have been particularly vocal in the last week about the announcement of the LFL coming to Canada. The article "Lingerie Football an Insult to Fully Clothed Players"
Sarah Mercer, who plays with the Regina Riot, stated that:

“I’ve had a lot emails and texts from people asking me if I’m playing in the Lingerie Football League. It upsets me because for women to play a sport we need to take our clothes off so someone will actually watch us. I tell them to not even talk to me about it.

You’re going to see those sexy women in their panties, then you’re going to see us in full equipment. Who will the men want to come watch? Still, I would rather not get that exposure because the Lingerie Football League is an insult to women. What’s next? Lingerie hockey? Where do you draw the line?

The Lingerie Football League comes out and now we’re not good enough to suit up in full gear and we need to take more off. The Lingerie Football League isn’t even in Canada and they are getting more publicity than any other tackle women’s football league in Canada

They have helmets and shoulder pads, but apparently their breasts are exposed. It’s obviously a league created by a man because they have never experienced turf burn. The women who are playing lingerie football aren’t pussycats. They can hit and they can play football. What upsets me is it’s women oppressing women. If women weren’t willing to put on equipment and hit each other in their panties, it wouldn’t be this big.”

Anyone considering joining the LFL needs to check out these two alternative, and far superior leagues.
