On Thursday, June 9, the NACWAA National Office team will host international women's sports management leaders from Bolivia, Germany, Malasia, Pakistan, the Palestinian Territories and South Africa as part of the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program. As part of their U.S. visit, the group will make a stop in Kansas City to discuss with NACWAA how the organization and its members work to empower and assists women in various fields of intercollegiate athletics for the purpose of advancement of women in the profession.

The visit stems from the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the Secretary’s Office of Global Women’s Issues, who recently spearheaded a Women’s World Cup Initiative that brings together international exchanges and sports to empower women and girls. The purpose of the visit is for participants to exchange ideas and best practices in the management of sports and recreational programs with their American counterparts.

A meeting recap and photos will follow--stay tuned!

Background
In the lead-up to the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the kick-off to the 40th anniversary year of Title IX, the U.S. Department of State launched a series of international soccer exchanges to highlight the value of sports in empowering women and girls. The initiative builds on Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s vision of “smart power diplomacy” to harness the full range of diplomatic tools at our disposal to advance United States foreign policy goals and foster greater understanding. The initiative also highlights the importance of Title IX, which is a landmark law in the United States, affording equal opportunity for men and women in academics and athletics.
