As a communications student I am constantly immersed in the possibilities that come with social media.  I'm also immersed in all the false promises that exist, but today we're focusing on the possible!  I follow the Everyday Sexism (@EverydaySexism) account on Twitter and everyday I raise an eyebrow at the harassment that women go through.  And I am well aware that blatant sexism exists but to read it daily really drives home how prevalent it is in our society.  Here are a few tweets from the last couple of days:

Everyday Sexism has grown to a community of over 125,000 followers and it forces us to take notice.  Drawing this back to sport and physical activity I thought: what if there was something equivalent for the world of movement?  What if there was a way to chronicle the day-to-day discrimination that takes place and seems harmless by itself but when aggregated illustrates how uneven the playing field remains.  So I created a Twitter account called Offside Plays (@offsideplays).  The goal is to create a space where people can share their experiences of sexism, ageism, homophobia, racism and other injustices in the world of sports and physical activity in order to:
1.) Voluntarily highlight the barriers that still exist in sport 2.) Provide a system of support3.) Serve as a research tool
I found a great example on the Everyday Sexism page of the kind of tweets I am hoping to highlight:
So give @offsideplays a follow!  I am starting with a Twitter account but depending on how things grow I would like to see it turn into a larger collaboration project.  If you have any ideas send them my way.  Please share it with your friends and colleagues and let's see what we can create!
