In keeping with SB Nation’s innovative use of social media in reshaping sports journalism, our vision is a women's basketball site that goes beyond merely providing game reports; instead, we want to capture the narratives that fuel our passion for the game, while maintaining the critical stance that helps us understand the game better.

Leave the WNBA Out of the NBA Lockout
As you know, the NBA lockout began yesterday after the league and the NBA Players Association could not come to terms on a new collective bargaining agreement. Though I have been expecting this lockout for quite awhile now, it still is something I'm not happy about, and really none of us should be happy about it, given that we have two of the big four sports leagues in work stoppages right now (The NFL is the other league). These lockouts don't only prevent NBA players from playing this fall (if it goes into the season), but many jobs are in jeopardy as well, from team business operations workers; to arena ushers and concession stand clerks; and to nearby restaurant and sports bar workers. Most of these workers actually work for the NBA teams, and most arenas I believe aren't owned by the teams either, but it's undeniable that they do make their living from the NBA at least indirectly. What's scarier is that the current MLB CBA ends this season, and the NHL's current CBA ends after the end of next season for what it's worth.. Is it actually possible that all four of these leagues could be in a work stoppage at the same time? I hope not, but it doesn't seem that far off either...
Anyway, some sports writers are already pointing the finger at the WNBA as at least part of the reason why as many as 22 out of 30 of the NBA's teams have reportedly lost money this season. Here is a blog post by the DC Basketcases that goes head on against this view, and I agree 100% with their points. While I acknowledge that the NBA has a broken financial and competitive model that doesn't truly give all the teams a fair shot to be competitive if well managed, I am against any idea to scale back or fold the WNBA. I think you should find this a good read to say the least.
