In keeping with SB Nation’s innovative use of social media in reshaping sports journalism, our vision is a women's basketball site that goes beyond merely providing game reports; instead, we want to capture the narratives that fuel our passion for the game, while maintaining the critical stance that helps us understand the game better.

Center Liz Cambage dunked in Australia's 70-66 win (boxscore) over Russia today, as already described by the AP.

Cambage caught the ball at the top of the lane from teammate Kristi Harrower with 6:14 left in the third quarter, took one dribble drove to the basket for the one-handed dunk.

Jackson said Cambage rarely dunks.

"Not even in practice," Jackson said, laughing. "That was so exciting."

While teammate Lauren Jackson might not have seen Cambage dunk all that much in practice, Ross Lewis of the The West Australian reported back on June 1 that Australian coach Carrie Graf had, "encouraged her to go for it if she gets the chance in London." A gaping hole in Russia's defense presented that opportunity in the third quarter.

Cambage finished the game with game-highs of 17 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 blocks.

Early reports are that FIBA couldn't confirm whether the 6-foot-8 center's dunk was the first in Olympic history, but it's definitely rare. Both 6-foot-6 Sylvia Fowles and 6-foot-1 Angel McCoughtry of the USA women's basketball already attempted to dunk in this year's Olympic competition but missed.
