Female boxing star Maureen Shea of the Bronx, New York will host a landmark reality show in Mexico, with filming beginning later this month in Chiapas, Mexico. The show, entitled "Todas Contra Mexico", will pit a team of female pro boxers from Mexico against an international team of female boxers. The winner will get $100,000 and will be crowned the World Boxing Council (WBC) International Champion.
Shea was a "firecracker" from the day she was born. She was bullied as a kid by a clique led by her former best friend and begged her parents to let her come home for lunch instead of facing a fight. She played basketball and some softball but was kicked out of high school.
At age 19, Shea found herself in an abusive relationship and went to a gym one day in search of an outlet. That's when she found boxing.
Now, at age 30, she is the reigning North American Boxing Federation (NABF) featherweight champion, holding a record of 15 wins and just 2 losses. She is often called "the Real Million Dollar Baby" for her work with Hillary Swank, preparing the actress for her role in the 2004 film Million Dollar Baby starring Swank and Clint Eastwood.
Shea is also the vice president of Global Boxing Promotions and promoted the first female boxing main event in New York City history when she pitted Alicia "Slick" Ashley against Crystal Hoy in January in Brooklyn.
And now, Shea's dream has come true: she will be returning to Mexico, where her mom's side of the family is from, to start filming Todas Contras Mexico (loosely translated, "everyone vs. Mexico") this month.
