Herb Brooks is most famous for coaching the 1980 US Olympic hockey team. You have probably heard of them/believe in miracles. If not, Al Michaels’ comb-over has failed us all.

At any rate, I was watching a documentary about the whole selecting/building of that 1980 team when I heard this story. It seems that Herb Brooks ALMOST made the 1960 US Olympic hockey team. Like, really almost, so much so that he was even in the team picture. I’ll let Wikipedia take over from here:

Some time later, Brooks sat at home with his father and watched the team he almost made win gold. That night Herb Sr. told his son, “looks like Coach Riley cut the right guy”; this humbling moment served as motivation for an already self-driven person.

“looks like Coach Riley cut the right guy”? Ouch. Too soon dad, too soon.

At any rate, this winter we’ll get to see the 2009 US Olympic hockey team and hockey dads everywhere are hoping they can burn their cut, adult sons just as harshly.
