When the U.S. Women’s National Team takes the field in Germany this Summer, they will do so in unique new attire. Images of the team’s 2011 FIFA World Cup kits were released last month, but the all-black away uniforms made their official on-field debut during an exhibition game against Japan this past weekend. The autographed game-worn jerseys of all 21 USWNT players from the USA-Japan match will be available via an Internet auction with all the proceeds going to benefit the Japanese tsunami relief.

The uniforms feature a noticeably more feminine silhouette, with a fitted black bodice. Capped sleeves, a high neckline and red piping help to create a bold design aesthetic. The gear is said to be inspired by the beautiful but deadly Black Widow spider and was designed specifically for the female athlete, to enhance the range of motion.

To give the USWNT a leg up on the competition, Nike has created their lightest and most environmentally friendly uniform. The jerseys are Nike’s most environmentally friendly and technologically advanced uniform yet. Each kit is made entirely from recycled polyester, produced from up to eight recycled plastic bottles per jersey. Recycled plastic bottles were diverted from landfills sites and then melted down to produce a new DriI-Fit yarn that was ultimately converted to fabric for the jerseys. This process saves raw materials and reduces energy consumption by up to 30 percent compared to manufacturing virgin polyester.”

Many have questioned the all-black decision as it is a departure from the country’s red, white and blue color scheme. Fans are also weary of the white, home attire, which has been likened to a nurses uniform. On the flip side, there are those who approve of the feminine, fashion-forward yet functional approach to the uniforms and applaud the sleek, classic design. Either way, you can pick up your own jersey here.

Sound off soccer fans: what do you think of the team’s new gear?
