NSSA Southwest explorer #3 goes off in scattered sandbar peaks
The Southwest Conference arrived at Surf City’s Golden West Street sandbars for the third event of the 2010-11 Explorer Season. The sometimes fickle sandbars cooperated in a big way for the contest with fun, well shaped 2-4 foot peaks rolling through all weekend.
Four perfect 10 wave scores highlighted a weekend of shredding by competitors of all ages and abilities. Jake Marshall, Griffin Colapinto and Kulia Doherty raised the bar with perfect scores and stellar surfing. Colapinto’s first perfect 10 of his young career came in the Menehuene repercharge while Doherty posted hers in the Girls final. Marshall was once again the contest standout tearing up the right and left peaks in both the Boys and Menehuene divisions.
Throwing up plenty of big moves, Marshall posted his first perfect 10 of the weekend in the Boys quarterfinals. His second perfect 10 came in the Menehuene final. Marshall’s remarkable performance earned him his second “Surfer of the Week” honor in less than a month. He will also be featured as the NSSA Surfer of the Month in the upcoming issue of Surfing Magazine.
In other highlights, Zach Emge claimed his very first NSSA victory in the Men’s division. Taylor Clark sealed his second consecutive victory in the Juniors. Christopher Murnane from Carlsbad reached a milestone in his young career clinching his first ever NSSA victory in the Boys. Jake Marshall has been ruling Explorer competition in the Menehuene division with “lights out” surfing collecting his third straight win.
It was a dream come true for 9-year-old Zach McCormick who claimed his first ever NSSA victory in the Super Grom division. Kulia Doherty dominated both the Women’s and Girls categories in her first Explorer appearance of the season. Rick Takahashi triumphed in the Masters for the second time this season which now puts his victory total at three counting his Seniors win in event #2.
Chris Munsterman clinched his second win of the season in the Seniors while Craig Macia took command of the Super Seniors for the second straight contest. In the Duke division, defending National Champion Patrick Schlick collected his second straight win. Shaun Thompson has launched an unbeatable campaign in the Explorer Longboard taking three straight wins.
The NSSA Southwest Conference is proud to have support from Nike 6.0, Huntington Surf and Sport, Java Point, Surfing Magazine, Sex Wax, Channel Islands and Sugar Shack. The NSSA is a member of Surfing America, the ISA-recognized National Governing Body for Surfing in the United States.
COMING UP IN CALI: The Gold Coast Conference heads north to the chilly waters of Morro Bay for event #5 on October 9th. The Northwest Conference opens up it’s 2010-11 contest season on October 10th at Morro Bay. Premier competition will rev up in the Southwest Conference as the Open Season stages event #3, October 16-17 at Del Mar Jetties in Camp Pendleton and then event #4 the following weekend October 23-24 at Oceanside Pier. College competition on the west coast will kick off the weekend of October 16-17 at world renowned Blacks Beach in San Diego.
