The 2010 W-League regular season will conclude this weekend and there are still a few postseason berths to be had across the various conferences.

Here’s how the W-League postseason is formatted:

The overall regular season champion automatically qualifies for the semifinals to be held in Santa Clarita, California while the league’s other top teams must compete in a playoff format.

The top two teams in the Western Conference will square off with the winner winning one of the four semifinal places.

In the Central Conference, the top two winners of the Midwest Division will face off while the winner between the 2nd and 3rd place team in the Northeastern Division will meet the 1st place team. The winners of these respective divisional playoffs will meet for a place in the semifinals.

And finally in the East, the top two teams in the Atlantic Division will duke it out for a chance to play the winner between the top two teams in the Northeast Division. The winner between these two divisions will earn the final place in the Final.

Central Conference

Great Lakes Division: This division remains very tight as the Ottawa Fury lead the pack with 24 points while the Toronto Lady Lynx have 21 and the Laval Comets are on 18. The Ottawa Fury will win the division with as much as a draw against the Quebec City Amiral. The Toronto Lady Lynx have a shot at qualifying for the postseason so long as the Laval Comets don’t get a result off of the Rochester Ravans, in which case they will leap-frog Toronto into the playoffs.

Midwest Division: This division has already been decided as the Buffalo Flash has won the division with the Chicago Red Eleven finishing three points behind them. The Flash could finish the undefeated if they beat the Cleveland Internationals this weekend.

Atlantic Division: This division has also been decided as the Atlanta Silverbacks have edged the Charlotte Eady Eagles by just two points. The two rivals have each earned their places in the postseason.

Northeast Division: The overall regular season winner could come from this division. The Hudson Valley Quickstrike Lady Blues will win regular season title if they beat third-placed Long Island Fury on Sunday. However if they lose or draw and the Washington Freedom Futures win against the Northern Virginia Majestics, they will be regular season champions. Regardless of the scenario, both teams are guaranteed to qualify for the postseason.

If one of these teams does end up winning the league title, the race between 3rd and 4th will carry much impetus. The Long Island Rough Riders are two points above the New Jersey Wildcats and it they lose or draw to HVLQB and the Wildcats defeat the New York Magic, the Wildcats will qualify for the postseason. Whew.

Western Conference

The Whitecaps have won this hotly-contested division but here’s yet another kooky scenario for you: if the Pali Blues (who currently sit in fifth place in a division with just six teams) can beat second-place Colorado Rush at home and the first-placed Vancouver Whitecaps can defeat the Seattle Sounders, the Blues could still qualify for the postseason. Crazy. However, if either the Rush or the Sounders win and the other loses, the winner will earn the final berth.
