Defensive midfielders never get much love which is unfortunate because this DM plays a critical role in her team. Miraildes Maciel Mota - otherwise known as Formiga – is the Chicago Red Stars’ scrappy, ever-energetic hardwoman.

Despite being just 5’3, the Brazilian international can be found constantly breaking up play, clogging up passing lanes and being a general pest to opposing midfielders. She ploughs space for her teammates to work in and is a perpetual threat with her crunching, yet clean tackles.

Formiga is a veteran of the game. The 32 year-old has appeared in every Women’s World Cup for Brazil since 1995 and every Olympiad since 1996. She’s also helped her team out considerably this year. The midfielder has missed just one match all season.

Formiga; the proverbial destroyer in a team full of creators.
