The first stoppages of the initial Olympic Women’s Boxing trials happened Wednesday night, as the Challengers bracket saw six more Olympic hopefuls eliminated.
Flyweight Tyrieshia Douglas (Baltimore, MD) started the night with a TKO stoppage of Taversha Norwood (Marietta, GA) at 1:18 of round 4. In the other flyweight bout, Virginia Fuchs (Kemah, TX) got the decision Alex Love (Monroe, WA) 21-16 to continue her Olympic dreams.
Not to be out done by Douglas, lightweight Mikaela Mayer (Los Angeles, CA) also scored the TKO. The referee stopped her match with Asia Stevenson (Washington D.C.) at 1:24 of round 4.
Also continuing on in the in the lightweight challenger’s bracket, Tiara Brown ( Lehigh Acres, FL) got the close decision over Bertha Aracil (Yonkers, NY) 12-11.
In what was the fight of the night, five time national champ Franchon Crews (Baltimore, MD) and Tiffanie Hearn (San Diego, CA) banged it out looking for a finish in the middleweight division. In the end, Crews got the decision 27-26 in an emotional moment for both competitors.
The evening rounded out with middleweight Raquel Miller (San Francisco, CA) getting the decision over Andrecia Wasson (Centerline, MI) 7-6.
The field has whittled to 12 boxers to fill 3 spots on the first ever US Women’s Olympic boxing team. Action continues Thursday night in Spokane, WA. The matches will steam on UniversalSports.com starting at 7 p.m. pacific.
