Combat Athletes Bare their Flags at Opening Ceremonies

Ireland’s Katie Taylor

With more female athletes taking part then men this year, this will be the “Year of the Woman” at the Olympics. All 205 countries brought female athletes, which is a first.

As the countries enter the Olympic Stadium in London, 83 female athletes held their flags high leading the way. Of those women, 24 represented the combat sports. Wrestling had the strongest showing with 8 flag bearers (only one male wrestler had the honor.) Judo and Taekwondo were well represented, with Irish boxer Katie Taylor being the most popular.
