Roxanne Modafferi (left) takes on Hitomi Akano at Sengoku in Tokyo
After her stunning loss to Sarah Kaufman this past summer, #5 ranked Roxanne Modafferi will be back on national tv to face another top contender in #8 ranked Hitomi Akano at the Sengoku Soul of Fighting Dec. 30 on HDNet live from Tokyo, Japan.
Modafferi was released by Strikeforce last month after her two losses to Kaufman and Strikeforce 135 pound champion Marloes Coenen. Modafferi also has a split decision win on top pound for pound fighter Tara LaRosa this past May. She is currently training in Japan, and cornered American fighter Molly Helsel at JEWELS MMA this past week.
Akano did impressive work in the Strikeforce 135 pound tournament this past August, win her opening round match to Carina Danm by submission, and losing a decision in the finals to #6 ranked Miesha Tate. Akano lost a split decision to top 145 pound contender Hiroko Yamanaka earlier this year. Akano is currently coached by one of the best fighters in the world Megumi Fujii, and is expected to be cornered by her on the card.
Amy Davis (left) takes on Misaki Takimoto (right) in 105 pound battle
Sengoku: Soul of Fight will also feature three other women’s fights, all including ranked fighters:
#9 ranked 105 pounder Amy Davis faces #3 ranked Misaki Takimoto
#6 ranked 145 pounder and Valkyerie open weight champion Rin Nakai faces Mika "Hari" Harigai
In a Muay Thai kickboxing match J-Girls, WPMF and WMC Mini-Flyweight Champion Erika Kamimura faces M-1 Women’s Mini-Flyweight champion Chiharu
There is no word on if all of the women’s battles will be broadcast live, but it is expected that Modafferi-Akano match will be televised. Sengoku: Soul of Fighting will be broadcast from Tokyo on HDNet Dec. 30.
