Baylor head coach Kim Mulkey granted her reserves significant playing time Thursday night when the Lady Bears hosted the Texas-Pan American Lady Broncs (8-8) at the Ferrell Center in front of a crowd of 6,841.
Baylor routed UTPA 101-55 in a game that started with a 14-0 run by the Lady Bears. Baylor extended their winning streak to ten games in the win.
Junior guard Lindsay Palmer began the game at point for Baylor (13-1) in her third career start and first this season. She took the place of freshman Odyssey Sims who did not play. Mulkey decided to let Sims rest after she complained of pain shin splints. Sims started the season in the homestretch of recovering from an ACL tear sustained last spring.
“She could’ve played forty minutes,” said Mulkey. But the coach mentioned that after watching senior Melissa Jones deal with an injury last year that she was probably being “too cautious” with Sims.
Every other player scored for the Lady Bears. Brittney Griner led the team with 21 points.
“I don’t know what they’re doing, but they’re doing a tremendous job with her,” said Lady Broncs head coach Denny Downing about Griner. He talked about her development over the past year.
“I don’t know anybody that has an answer for her.”
Baylor sophomore Destiny Williams recorded the first double-digit scoring effort of career with 12 points and had a career-high nine rebounds.
For the Lady Broncs, sophomore Bianca Torre from Harlingen led her team with 15 points.
UTPA’s next contest is against another Big 12 team. They travel to Stillwater, Oklahoma to face Oklahoma State on January 2.
The Big 12 kicks off its conference schedule on Saturday, January 8 with five games. Baylor and Iowa State kick off the action at 11:00 a.m. CT in Waco. The game will be televised on FSN.
