Moore89.jpgAs The Guru, HOF sportswriter Mel Greenberg said, Connecticut acted as an eclipse of the basketball world on Tuesday. And rightfully so, setting a NCAA D-I record in winning its 89th consecutive game against No. 22 Florida State.

Next up for UConn is a trip west where the Huskies will play Pacific on Dec. 28 and No. 8 Stanford on Dec. 30 to complete their nonconference schedule. The Huskies, which last lost to the Cardinal in 2008, have a chance to get close to the all-time basketball win streak of 131 set by Wayland Baptist University in the 1950s in the Amateur Athletic Union.

But there were a few other happenings elsewhere, too.

Arizona State defeated No. 16 DePaul while No. 3 Duke handled an impressive No. 4 Xavier team. On the local side, Gonzaga turned a seven-point halftime victory into a 27-point win against BYU, a future West Coast Conference opponent.

And while Seattle University couldn't get a good start in a road loss to St. Mary's, Puget Sound coach Loree Payne, a former Washington standout, has the Loggers winning eight consecutive games. Here's a good feature on her start at UPS.
