Ely received the WBCA All-American award for her outstanding high school basketball performance. She was part of the U.S. Junior National Tea. She attended the University of Tennessee. As a Lady Vol she was named an All-American and on the watch list for the 2005 Wade Trophy. She was picked 14th overall in the WNBA Draft to the San Antonio Silver Stars. She moved to the Seattle Storm in 2007, then to the Chicago Sky in 2009. In 2011, she moved to the Indiana Fever.
