In high school, Canty received a High School All-American by the WBCA.  She attended the University of Alabama and was named first team All-American by the AP during her senior year. After graduating in 1999 she was drafted as a third round pick to the Detroit Shock where she was runner up in the Rookie of the Year Award. In 2007 she was signed to the Chicago Sky.
