As a high schoolers, Hornbuckle was named WBCA All-American and played in the 2004 WBCA High School All-America Game where she earned MVP honors. She continued her career at the University of Tennessee and was a standout player during two of their NCAA appearances. In 2005 she was named All-SEC Freshman Team. In 2007 she was named All-SEC First Team and SEC All-Tournament Team. In 2007, she was part of the  USA team for the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In 2008, Hornbuckle was picked fourth overall in the WNBA draft to the Detroit Shock. In her first WNBA game, Hornbuckle set a franchise record by making seven steals while playing just 19 minutes.
