Alexander started her career at the University of Iowa. As a sophomore, Alexander became the first Big Ten women's basketball player to record two triple-doubles in the same season. In 2009/2010 she was named Associated Press and State Farm Coaches' (WBCA) honorable mention all-American and Big Ten all-Defensive team. Alexander claimed the Big Ten rebounding title also during the 2009/2010 season. In 2011, she received the first Premier Player of College Basketball Award. In the 2011 WNBA draft, Alexander was picked 26th overall by the Minnesota Lynx.
