After averaging 22.3 ppg, 18.8 rpg, 8, 0 apg, and 6.4 blocks per game her senior season, being ranked the #15 high school senior in the nation by HoopGurlz.com, and the #13 by scout.com, Alex Montgomery selected Georgia Tech to continue her basketball career. At Georgia Tech, Montgomery continued her highly successful career by being named to the 2008 ACC All-Freshman team and the ACC All-Academic team, garnering ACC Rookie of the week honors twice, and ranking in the top 10 all-time in Georgia Tech history for points (335), rebounds (168), blocked shots (25), and steals (53) by a freshman. As a team co-captain her sophomore year, Montgomery was named third team All-ACC, led the team with 13.7 ppg, 6.7 rbg, and 31.1 minutes per game. As a junior, she was again named to the third team All-ACC, selected as the 2010 ACC Sixth Player of the year, and was a team co-captain for the second straight year. Montgomery finished out her senior year strong by being named State Farm Coaches' All-America Honorable Mention, the State of Georgia Women's College Player of the Year, Second Team All-ACC, and ACC All-Defensive Team. She led the Yellow Jackets to a school record 24 wins, an NCAA Tournament birth, and helped Georgia Tech win only its third tournamnet game. She led Tech in points her senior year with13.0 per game, and rebounds, with 8.6 per contest. She was second on the team with 81 assists and 73 steals. She finished out her career at Georgia Tech by being sixth on the all-time scoring list with 1, 565 points, third in three-pointers made with 237, fourth in rebounds with 837, fifth in steals with 226, and tied for second in games placed with 123. In the 2011 WNBA draft, Alex Montgomery was selected as the 10th overall pick by the New York Liberty.
